About the adverts on this site

Advertising policy

This website may display advertising served by Microsoft Advertising (Bing Ads). This page explains how that advertising works, what data it involves, and how you can control or opt out of it.

How ad serving works on this site

We do not sell anything through this website and we do not run our own advertising campaigns here. However, to help cover the costs of keeping the site online, advertising spaces on some pages may be filled by Microsoft Advertising. When you open a page that carries an advert, your browser requests the advert directly from Microsoft's servers. Microsoft chooses which advert to show and records the event (an "impression") for billing and measurement. We receive advertising revenue from Microsoft, but we do not see the adverts in advance as individuals, we do not provide Microsoft with your personal data, and we are not told who you are.

Microsoft's use of cookies and data

To serve and measure advertising, Microsoft may set and read cookies on your device, and may use device identifiers and the IP address your browser presents. Depending on the advert and the settings on your Microsoft account and browser, these technologies can be used to:

  • count how many times an advert has been shown and clicked;
  • limit how often you see the same advert;
  • measure the overall performance of advertising campaigns; and
  • decide which adverts are most likely to be relevant to you.

How Microsoft handles this data is governed by its own policies, in particular the Microsoft Advertising policies and the Microsoft privacy statement. We encourage you to read both.

Personalised and non-personalised advertising

Personalised advertising (sometimes called interest-based advertising) uses information about your browsing activity and interests, which may be combined across sites and over time, to select adverts likely to be relevant to you. Non-personalised advertising does not use information about your interests or browsing history; adverts are chosen using contextual factors, such as the content of the page you are reading, along with coarse location derived from your IP address.

On this site, personalised advertising is only active if you have accepted non-essential cookies through the consent banner. If you decline, any advertising shown will be non-personalised.

How to opt out

You have several routes to control or opt out of personalised advertising:

  • Microsoft ad personalization settings — sign in to your Microsoft account and adjust your advertising preferences, or use the opt-out mechanisms Microsoft provides in its privacy dashboard, as described in the Microsoft privacy statement.
  • Digital Advertising Alliance — opt out of participating companies' interest-based advertising at optout.aboutads.info.
  • Network Advertising Initiative — opt out at optout.networkadvertising.org.
  • On this site — click the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of any page and choose "Decline", which stops non-essential (advertising) cookies from being set here.
  • In your browser — block third-party cookies or use tracking prevention features; this limits what advertising networks can do across all sites.

Opt-outs are normally implemented by setting an opt-out cookie on your device, so if you clear your cookies the opt-out may need to be renewed. Opting out does not remove advertising; it means the adverts you see will not be selected using your interests.
