Cookie policy

This page explains what cookies are, which categories this website may use, how our consent banner works, and how you can change or withdraw your consent at any time.

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. Cookies let a site remember things between pages and visits — such as the fact that you have already answered a consent banner, or your preferences on a feature. Some cookies are set by the website you are visiting (first-party cookies); others are set by third-party services embedded in the page, such as a map or an advertising network. Similar technologies, such as the browser's local storage, work in a comparable way, and this policy covers both.

The categories used on this site

Category Purpose Duration
Strictly necessary Required for the site to function. This includes your consent choice itself, which is stored in your browser's local storage under the key allelec-consent-v1 so the banner does not keep reappearing, and any security-related cookies set by the hosting provider. These are not used for tracking or marketing. Stored until you clear it through the "Cookie settings" link in the footer or your browser settings.
Preferences Remember choices you make that are not strictly required, such as dismissing informational notices. This site currently sets no preference cookies beyond the consent choice itself. Where used, typically up to 12 months.
Analytics Would help us understand in aggregate how visitors use the site (which pages are read, roughly where visitors come from). We do not currently run an analytics service of our own; if this changes, this category will only be activated after you accept non-essential cookies. Where enabled by consent, typically up to 24 months.
Advertising Set by Microsoft Advertising (Bing Ads) if adverts are shown on this site: to count impressions, cap how often an advert appears, and show more relevant adverts. Google may also set cookies when the embedded map on the contact page loads. See our advertising policy for detail and opt-out routes. Set by the third parties involved; commonly up to 13 months, subject to their own policies.

How the consent banner works

The first time you visit any page on this site, a banner appears at the bottom of the screen explaining that we use cookies and pointing to this policy. You can:

  • Accept — non-essential cookies (such as advertising cookies) may be set from then on;
  • Decline — only strictly necessary storage is used;
  • Follow the link to read this policy before deciding.

Your choice is stored in your browser's local storage, not on our servers, so the banner will not be shown again on that browser and device. Clearing your browser's site data, using private browsing, or switching devices will reset the choice, and the banner will ask again — that is expected behaviour.

How to withdraw or change your consent

You can change your mind at any time. The "Cookie settings" link in the footer of every page deletes your stored choice and brings the banner straight back, so you can accept or decline again with a single click. You do not need to clear anything yourself.

Browser-level cookie controls

Every mainstream browser lets you refuse, delete or limit cookies independently of this site:

  • Chrome — Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data.
  • Firefox — Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data.
  • Edge — Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies.
  • Safari — Settings → Privacy, then Manage Website Data.

You can also block third-party cookies specifically, which stops most advertising and embedded-content cookies while leaving the site usable. If you block all cookies, this site will still work, but the consent banner will reappear on each visit because it will have nowhere to remember your answer.
